Dear Diary, I found the most beautiful walnut box today in which to keep you.
This walnut box is carefully sculpted to reveal naturally spalted maple on every side of the box, inside and out. The box is sized to hold a leather-bound diary, a similarly sized book or any treasure that deserves a special place.
Useable interior dimensions are 11-1/4"x8-1/4"x1-1/2". Exterior dimensions are 12"x9"x3-1/4".
Maple that has been spalted is a natural process that leaves distinctive black lines in the wood that always fascinate the eye.
The box lid opens on two pivoting pin hinges set into the bottom back corners of the lid. The lid is positioned so that it will stand upright at a 95 degree angle without further support.
This box was made in my small wood shop with hand tools and small shop power tools. The box is finished with Osmo PolyX, an environmentally safe hard wax/oil blend that requires only a light dusting from time to time.
The diary in the photos is for the purpose of relative size and is not included with the purchase of the box.
This is the only box that I have made like this.
